The police said that the gang was basically active in the Mumbai region and two of them are Malvani residents and history-sheeters.
Dr Shivaji Rathod, superintendent of police, Thane rural police, said that on Thursday they got a tip-off that the gang members would target a jeweller from Indralok to Kanakia Road area. A trap was then laid at around 11.50pm on Thursday after which the gang was spotted and arrested.
The accused, Mohammed Yusuf Yakib Shaikh, Rajkumar aka Rajan Gupta, Tipu Noor Ahmed Sheikh and Muktar Qureshi were arrested, one Chhotu managed to flee, added Rathod.
The police seized iron rods, country-made revolver, iron rods, screw drivers, iron rods, chilli powder and nylon ropes.
They confessed to the police that they targeted mobile shops by using gas cutters to cut the shutters or grilles of shops.

The police said that they are finding out their criminal antecedents and accordingly will slap the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA).
