Provide Rs 10 lakh each to kin of youths who died of asphyxiation: Unions | Coimbatore News


Tirupur: Trade unions on Tuesday urged the district administration to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of four youths from Assam who died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sludge collecting tank in a textile washing unit at in Karuppagoundenpalayam near Veerapandi in the city on Sunday.
CITU Tirupur joint general secretary N Subramanian submitted a petition before the district sub collector stating “as per Section 7 of the Prohibition Of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, the district administration should take steps to provide Rs 10 lakh compensation each to families of all the four deceased”.

He also urged the district administration to ensure that manual scavenging isn’t practiced anymore and prevent deaths arising out of such practices.

Following the incident, police had booked the unit owner Jayakumar under Sections 287 and 304 (A) of the Indian Penal code, while the pollution control board, along with revenue officials, sealed the unit. tnn
