CHENNAI: National swimming champion M B Balakrishnan died on the spot after falling off a two-wheeler he was riding on and coming under the wheels of a truck here on Tuesday night.
The accident happened when Balakrishnan was going from Arumbakkam to his home at Jayalakshmi Colony in Shenoy Nagar. A female friend, who was riding pillion on the two-wheeler, escaped unhurt.
Balakrishnan tried to overtake a concrete mixer truck. The two-wheeler slightly hit the truck, and he lost control of the vehicle.
He fell on the road and was run over by the truck. Police said the accident was recorded by a CCTV camera in the area.
His body was sent to Government Kilpauk Hospital for postmortem. Police detained truck driver Subramanian, 32, of Villupuram.
Son of a doctor couple, Balakrishnan won gold at the 11th South Asian Games in Dhaka in 2010. He was an alumnus of Guindy Engineering College. He did his M S in the US and was working there.
