PATNA: After PM Narendra Modi‘s recent campaign in Buxar, Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, who is facing a tough challenge from RJD stalwart Jagadanand Singh, is not only confident of his own victory, but also believes that NDA will win all 40 seats in Bihar. TOI’s Faryal Rumi catches up with him. Excerpts:
What are the main issues you are raising in Buxar?
Buxar has been a land of spirituality since the ‘Satyug’. But the original identity of Buxar is lost and I want to revive it by developing tourism to attract more devotees. Towards this step, the foundation for Ramayan circuit was laid after Centre’s nod in 2015. However, one of the main issues in Buxar today is lack of sufficient water supply for irrigation. I have repeatedly raised this issue in Parliament and will get this issue resolved soon after the NDA forms the government again.
In the past five years, what are the works you’ve done for your constituency?
Around 1,200 villages here had no power, they are all electrified now. There was no factory or industry here. The first electric feeder for irrigation in Bihar was set up at Buxar. We also got the approval for the ambitious Buxar Thermal Power Plant at Chausa, which will have the capacity to produce 1,300MW electricity. PM Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for the power plant on March 9. This plant will generate direct and indirect employment for almost 5 lakh people. Small-scale industries have also been established to generate employment.
As the minister of state for health, how many medical colleges and hospitals were built in your tenure in Bihar?
There were only three medical colleges in Bihar before I became the minister of state for health at the Centre. I laid the foundation for five new medical colleges in the state. There are eight medical colleges being built with the help of the Centre in Bihar. I have started another project in Buxar worth crores for the safety of cows. I also took the initiative to connect Buxar Sadar Hospital with AIIMS at Patna. It will be linked to other AIIMS in Delhi and elsewhere. We have also tried to connect seven national highways with more districts.
Your main rival says you haven’t done much for Buxar and hence you are seeking votes in the name of PM Narendra Modi or on national issues
Why don’t you ask my opponent if they can mention a single work they did during their tenure. I can tell you about dozens of work that have been done during my tenure. We are also trying to make the Buxar railway station a world-class facility. Moreover, I am seeking votes on my own achievements. Just the work I have done to preserve the historical values of Buxar is enough.
What do you think of the opposition?
We want to destroy nepotism. We are against khandanwad (nepotism). The families of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav are corrupt. They should be shown the exit from politics.
What is your opinion on the Mahagathbandhan?
They are a group of thieves and corrupt people. They have looted the country for decades. We don’t want such people in the government. We want an honest government that can make the nation great again so that the country can be proud of its leader.
How certain are you about your victory?
We are winning all 40 seats in Bihar. There is a wave of tsunami and we are coming back with a bang. The Mahagathbandhan will face defeat and will be sent to the Indian Ocean to rest forever.
What would you consider your government’s most significant policy campaigns and why? Swachh Bharat or Ayushmann Bharat?
The government is providing benefits to the poor under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Under this scheme around Rs 300 to 500 crore is being spent to provide health facilities to the needy. We have built toilets in large numbers under Swachch Bharat mission and helped crores of families. So, both are equally important and significant campaign policies.
What are your party’s main agenda in this election?
The main agenda of the party is development, national security, prestige of the country, true spirit of nationalism and not letting any “weak leader” take over and put the country’s safety and security at risk.
