At present, the SIT is questioning the suspects following which they would submit a report to the jail superintendent, a copy of which would also be forwarded to the local police for further questioning and investigation.
On April 10, Livtar was found dead inside the bathroom of barrack number 1 with draw-string of his pajama around his neck. Initially the jail authorities suspected it to be a suicide case. However, when the postmortem report suggested that the inmate was strangulated to death, Ludhiana jail superintendent Shamsher Singh Boparai formed a three-member SIT to investigate the case.
On Tuesday, mother and sister of Livtar went to the Ludhiana Central Jail on Tajpur Road, seeking justice and action against culprits. Initially, the guards did not allow them to enter the office complex, but it was deputy jail superintendent Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal who met the kin and pacified them.
Dhaliwal said, “The SIT has identified three suspects in this case and they are being questioned. Once SIT finalises the report, it would be submitted with the superintendent and a copy of it would be sent to the local police. Further the police will question the accused and proceed further.”
“Kin of Livtar were upset for obvious reasons. And we have told them that we will ensure justice,” he added.
The SIT, formed on Friday, comprises two DSP-ranked officials and one assistant superintendent. It had been asked to submit a report within seven days.
Satvinder Kaur, mother of the deceased, had earlier claimed that jail inmates had assaulted Livtar around 15 days back. The same inmates had murder her son, she had alleged. Livtar Singh had been lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail for the past one year for snatching cases.
