ROHTAK: Sepoy Sandeep Malik of 24 Grenadiers was killed in an anti-terrorist operation at Dalipora village of Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday morning. The 27-year-old soldier from Haryana, who joined the Army in 2012, sustained serious injuries in the gunfight and succumbed to them hours later.
Three Jaish-e-Mohammed militants, including top commander Khalid Bhai, and a civilian were also killed. Khalid, said to be a Pakistani, has been identified as the mastermind of the 2017 terrorist attack on a CRPF camp in Lethpora, in which five security personnel were killed.
Sandeep, who had been posted in Jammu and Kashmir for the last two years, had a long chat with his wife of two years Neeru Devi and other members of his family on Wednesday. Sandeep’s father Satbir Malik is a farmer and his mother Rajbala Devi is a housewife and the family lives in Balamba village of Haryana’s Meham district.
His family members said that Sandeep’s body would be first sent to Delhi and from there to their village by Thursday night. His funeral will be held with full state honours on Friday.
Sandeep had been trying to get two-week leave to visit his family. While talking to his wife and younger brother on Wednesday, he told them he was hopeful of getting one-week leave soon. He sounded healthy and fine over phone, said a family member.
A memorial to Sandeep will soon be erected close to the one erected in honour of his uncle Sumer Singh Malik, who too was killed in the line of duty while fighting terrorists in 2004. He was a commandant in the Border Security Force and had been posted in Raisinghnagar town of Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district at the time.
Several dignitaries, including BJP leader Shamsher Kharkhara, visited Balamba village to console the grieving family.
