MEERUT: The father of the Hapur woman who burnt herself over cops’ refusal to file complaint of her gang-rape after she was allegedly sold by him for Rs 10,000 has told TOI that he is aghast and ashamed over her daughter’s false allegations.
“Why would a father sell his daughter for Rs 10,000? For that matter, why would I marry her at the age of 14? I am aghast at these false allegations,” the 49-year-old man said.
“I got to know about her plight through media reports. We were not even contacted. And now, she has brought such serious charges against me and others. I don’t even feel like stepping outside my house.”
The man, a marginal farmer in Hapur, added that his wife has not eaten anything since news of their daughter’s self-immolation reached them.
The woman, battling for life at a hospital in the national capital, has alleged in the FIR that she was sold off by her father for Rs 10,000 to a man who subjected her to unspeakable abuse. She has also alleged that she was married at 14 and later raped by 16 men over a period of five years starting 2014. Speaking with TOI, she said that she set herself ablaze when police didn’t take action against her tormentors.
Her father, however, said, she was making wrong claims about her age.
“She was born in 1991, which makes her 28 years old. She was first married 10 years ago, that is when she was 18 years old. Her first marriage lasted for a year, after which she was married to another man, who readily accepted the son from her first marriage. Their marriage was going on just fine, when she suddenly ran away with a third man to Moradabad. If at all she was raped, and her husband was not listening to her then she should have confided in us, but that never happened. And now, suddenly, she is making so many allegations,” he said.
There is no clarity on the woman’s age. While in the FIR, her birth year has been mentioned as 2001, which makes her 18 years old, her Aadhaar card — a copy of which is with TOI — shows she was born in 1990, which makes her 29 years old. However, when TOI met the woman at the hospital in Delhi on Monday, she said she was 23 years old.
She is the eldest among her four siblings. She has two brothers and one sister – a 19-year-old brother being the youngest.
“Even when she was in Moradabad, and called to check on us, I used to advise her that she has three kids and she should not leave them,” said her father, who has no plans to go and see her in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the villagers where she was living last with her second husband have turned against her. “The men she has named are in the age group of 18-55 years. Had such a thing happened in the village, it is impossible to keep it under the wraps. She has not been living in the village for the last 1.5 years and she has now come up with these false allegations suddenly. We request the police to not make any arrests until any evidence is found in the matter,” said Rajan Sirohi, the village pradhan.
The villagers also met ADG (Meerut zone) Prashant Kumar on Tuesday and put forward the demand for a fair probe.
“This is a matter of investigation and it will be examined. If there is any fault on our part, it will be investigated. Meanwhile, it will be taken care that the guilty are arrested but it will also be taken care that no innocent gets arrested,” said ADG Meerut zone Prashant Kumar.
Circle Officer (Hapur city) Rajesh Kumar Singh said, “I met the woman in the hospital and the doctors told me that she has got some 35-40% burns. She has started healing and will be cured soon. Police investigation is underway and once we get concrete evidence, arrests will be made.”
