GUWAHATI: The preliminary investigation in the case of RG Baruah road bomb blast on Wednesday revealed that a ‘Chinese grenade’ was used by the suspected Ulfa (I) militants.
The reconstruction of the crime scene suggested that the unidentified militants have possibly lobbed the grenade from the other side of the road and was targeted at the security personnel deployed at the Naka checking in front of the shopping mall.
Guwahati police commissioner Deepak Kumar said, “The initial probe suggested that the explosion was done possibly by using a Chinese grenade. Forensic tests are going on to ascertain the findings.”
The Chinese grenade, reportedly smaller and having low intensity can cause major damage to its nearby surroundings. Militant outfits in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir were being found to be using the Chinese grenades. Earlier, Ulfa (I) rebels were caught with explosives and grenades having Chinese markings during operations over the past two years.
The commissioner of police added, “The reconstruction of the crime scene suggested that the grenade was possibly thrown from the other side of the road.” Sources added that eyewitnesses have claimed that two motorcycle-borne men coming from the Japorigog side have thrown the explosive. However, the police were yet to confirm the claims.
Meanwhile suffering a major setback, the city police have called upon all the owners, managers of shopping malls, multiplex, supermarkets, hotels as well as civil society groups and nagarik committees on Thursday and sought their support in keeping sharp vigilance over criminal elements in the city.
The top cop informed, “A discussion was held and several suggestions have cropped up during it to enhance the safety of the citizens.” The city police have asked the shopping mall owners, multiplexes and hotels to increase its surveillance and security mechanism too.
However, the city police came under severe criticism following the blast too. “Police checking on the road is only limited to inspecting the drunken drive, vehicle papers and use of helmets. The CCTV cameras installed by the police department are too lying dysfunctional. In such cases, only asking the private parties to enhance the security measures will not help,” stated a participant in the meeting.
