Chandigarh: Second brother gets 20-year jail for rape | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: A district court has awarded 20-year imprisonment to a man convicted of raping his minor cousin. In November 2017, the court had awarded a similar term in this case to his brother, a juvenile at that time.
The latest convict will also have to pay a fine of Rs 1.05 lakh. The verdict says the court wanted to award the man a deterrent punishment to protect society from abominable crimes. The judgment reads: “The accused has committed rape… the offence being grave… does not call for leniency. The court said that considering that the survivors of rape carry its scars for life, a 20-year sentence and Rs 1.5-lakh fine were justified in this case.
On August 20, 2016, the survivor, then 16, had gone to her brother’s house after a fight with mother. She was waiting for him on the staircase of the Manimajra house when around 11pm, her two cousins came out there and dragged her to a room, where they raped her. The trial of both accused ran separately, since one was a juvenile. The trial for the older sibling concluded on May 10 after the court held him guilty. On Thursday, the quantum of sentence was announced.
