CHANDIGARH: Congress workers on Tuesday dressed in graduation robes sold pakoras in Sector 34 market, close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally venue, in a mock protest against the BJP.
The protest was held in response to a controversial remark on employment made by PM Modi in which he had said that persons selling pakoras and earning Rs 200 per day could be considered employed. Chandigarh Congress leader Harmail Kesari said the BJP had failed to keep its promise of creating 2 crore jobs every year. Another Congress leader said the protest was also against the policies of the BJP government that have increased unemployment in the country. “Under Modi’s regime, unemployment has broken all previous records. The government rather than providing jobs is busy hiding employment figures,” he added.
Congress workers raised slogans against the Modi government and BJP candidate Kirron Kher.
The Congress workers alleged that when the government failed to provide jobs to the unemployed youth of this country, senior BJP leaders made fun of the unemployed by giving statements “frying pakoras and selling tea are also jobs”.
Police detained the Congress workers and took them to Sector 34 police station, who were released after Modi’s rally got over.
