The accused was caught when he was trying to dispose of the body, which had been cut into pieces and filled in two sacks, at a pond in the village.
According to police, accused Chhota Singh had thrown the first sack into the pond and was about throw the second one too when locals noticed the commotion and caught hold of him. Police have since recovered the body parts from the pond and the accused has confessed to the crime.
Police said Rajwinder Singh was sleeping at his home when his father hit him in the head and on the throat with a sharp-edged weapon.
As Rajwinder’s relationship with his wife was strained, she used to live with her father-in-law in Faridkot, who was working as an agricultural labourer. Rajwinder was a junk dealer.
Chhota used to visit Dabrikhana daily to work in the fields. Sarpanch Tej Singh, who resides near Rajwinder’s came to know of the killing from a crowd which had gathered outside. He informed the police and a team reached the spot in 20 minutes. The crowd then handed over the accused to the cops.
This is the second such incident in the area. On February 8, 2017, a corporal posted at the Air Force station in Bhisiana, Bathinda, was allegedly killed by a sergeant on the suspicion of the deceased having an affair with his wife. He too had cut the body into pieces for disposing it of and had stuffed the body in plastic bags, which he kept in an almirah and a refrigerator.
The sarpanch said Rajwinder had a son and a daughter. While the daughter lived with his sister in Faridkot, the son had been living with Rajwinder. Before carrying out the crime, the accused had dropped the 15-year-old son to his house. Faridkot SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said the accused was in their custody. “During initial investigation, we found that Chhota Singh was in an illicit relationship with Rajwinder’s wife and wanted to get rid of him,” he said, adding that a case of murder and disappearance of evidence of crime had been registered against the accused. He said they were investigating into the role of Rajwinder’s wife in the crime.
